Windhorse: Ethical Trading

Windhorse: Ethical Trading

Windhorse products are sourced from developing countries across the world, and are made by workers in areas that are poor by Western standards. We aim to bring genuine benefits to these people through our ethical trade with them and through direct aid.

Windhorse never claimed to be a "Fair Trade" business, but nevertheless its principles were very much in keeping with Fair Trade principles. In its own words:

"Windhorse is inspired by Buddhist values and ethos. This finds its practical application in our dealings with our suppliers, customers and the environment. We build real & lasting connections with our suppliers and we treat our customers fairly, honestly and with respect. In particular we aim to:

  • pay a fair price
  • build personal connections with suppliers
  • check for good wages and working conditions
  • be mindful of environmental issues
  • respond to local needs by passing back some of our profits to aid the communities where our goods are made
  • support crafts that nurture traditional ways of life."

Most of the suppliers which Shared Earth is now distributing are linked with social projects supported by Windhorse, which Shared Earth aims to continue supporting. These include:

SOCIAL PROJECT - THAILAND

Ban Rom Sai is an orphanage located in Chiang Mai, Thailand. It provides a home to 30 children, including some who contracted HIV at birth. The home aims to provide a nurturing environment where they can find a skill they are good at and enjoy.

SOCIAL PROJECT - BALI

Working closely with our supplier in Bali, Windhorse funded a school for disabled people in Ubud, the local town of the villages where we buy our goods. Kupu-Kupu provide a minibus to take children to their centre, where they do lessons, craft making, yoga, and meet other children.

SOCIAL PROJECT - GUATEMALA

Guatemala in Central America is where Windhorse's worry dolls and other Mayan-inspired gifts come from. In partnership with their supplier, Windhorse helped fund three schools. This helped increase the number of pupils at these schools, which now totals 400 and is expected to grow.
